SCHOEN

Photo Design 2 | Fall 2022

Tasked with showcasing portraiture photography, Schoen highlights individuals and their specific pair of shoes that holds significant value. While exploring the process of book making, I decided to focus on the details, actions, and structure of each shoe being featured before sharing its personal value.

To creatively highlight history and those who participated in the process of shoe making, the title “Schoen” was chosen because it’s the Dutch word for shoe.

This book was engineered through purposeful construction to introduce the main individuals and choice of shoe without giving any context. Intended to make the audience curious about who the people are and what the specific shoe potentially means to that individual.

The construction contradicts the layout of images in order to add an element of design thinking to Schoen.

Why Do They Matter?

The big question of personal value for the shoes is displayed on the back half of Schoen. The build up towards each answer is highlighted through photography in the first half of the photo book.
